NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, Aug. 6, 1842 This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
An inside page has an article: "Illinois" which begins: "The Mormon excitement appears to increase...It appears that the prophet of the sect, Joseph Smith...have about six thousand votes under their immediate control, sufficient to give them the balance of power...The predominance of the sect is secured to great extend indeed...states that they are authorised to punish any violation of their city ordinances by imprisonment for life, & one of their ordinances prohibits any one from speaking disrespectfully of Smith, under severe penalties." The articles carries of to the next page, taking over an entire column in total, and has: "Later. Disappearance of Elder Orson Pratt!" (see photos).
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, nicecondition.
