NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, Aug. 31, 1844 This newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
Almost an entire page is taken up with a report headed:"The Mormons" which begins: "The recent death of Joseph Smith & his brother, by lawless violence, while confined in jail, has been justly reprobated by the public voice..." with much more. Also within the article: "...I need not review the history of the Mormons...they have every where been troublesome neighbors...they have bred difficulties where none before existed...they have always manifested a disposition to resist or evade the general laws of the state..." and much more. Some fascinating reading, with the photos showing just portoins. An uncommonly lengthy article on the Mormons.
Other articles within this issue include: "Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), "Southern Convention, or South Carolina Resistance" "Texas Or Disunion" , a lengthy letter signed by Henry Clay; "Annexation of Texas" which includes a letter signed: Andrew Jackson, and much more.
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, great condition.
