July 20, 1861
SUGAR PLANTER, West Baton Rouge, Louisiana, July 20, 1861 An extremely rare title from the Confederacy. Gregory notes this newspaper is held by only one institution.
This is a single sheet newspaper with the entire ftpg. taken up with ads and "Police Jury Proceedings". The bkpg. is almost entirely taken up with text & news reports including: "Anti-War Spirit at the North" which includes: "...that a large & powerful party, sternly opposed to Lincoln's war policy, is springing up North & West...". Also: "The Confederate League" "Turning Out War Material" "One of the War Parsons" "Willing to Die For His Country" "The Delaware Peace Convention" "Arms For Kentucky" and a few other smaller tidbits.
Folio size, single sheet, various foxing spots, light damp staining in the bottom quadrant, generally nice
