September 22, 1938
THE NEW YORK TIMES, New York, NY, September 22, 1938

* New England
* Long Island NY Hurricane Disaster
* 1938 Freak Storm

This 46 page newspaper has a three line, 3 column headline on the front page: "HURRICANE SWEEPS COAST; 11 DEAD, 71 MISSING, L.I. TOLL; 80 DIE IN NEW ENGLAND FLOOD" with many subheads. (see) Much more inside with related photos. Nice to have in this famous NYC title.

Other news of the day throughout. Light browning, otherwise in good condition.
wikipedia notes: "The New England Hurricane of 1938 (or Great New England Hurricane or Long Island Express or simply The Great Hurricane of 1938) was the first major hurricane to strike New England since 1869. The storm formed near the coast of Africa in September of the 1938 Atlantic hurricane season, becoming a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale before making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on Long Island on September 21. The hurricane killed 500-700 people and caused $6.0 billion (2004 US dollars) in damages.

The hurricane storm surge caused immense damage in New England because it hit during high tide, a full moon, and the fall equinox. It is the strongest hurricane to hit New England in recorded history."
