August 04, 1800
Despite the banner heading across the top of this single sheet, this item was actually printed on August 4, 1800 as noted at the bottom of the reverse side. It was printed at Rome, New York, and presented to the patrons of the "Columbian Patriotic Gazette" newspaper (see).
The heading across the top of the front page is: "ADDRESS OF THE LATE GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON to the Citizens of the United States on Declining a Re-Election to the Office of President." There is also a prefacing paragraph above the heading (see).
This is the complete historic address wherein George Washington declined a third term as President, and is signed by him in type at the bottom of the reverse side: G.Washington, United States, 17th Sept. 1796" (see).
A single sheet broadsheet, exceedingly rare, measures 10 1/4 by 16 3/4 inches, some archival mends near the edges, some minor loss at the margins which affects just 3 or 4 words on the back side.
