FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED, New York, March 13, 1880 The prime feature of this issue is the very historic half page print captioned: "Admission to the United States Supreme Court of the First Colored Lawyer, at Washington, Feb. 2d." which also has a related article on the preceding page (see). The man was Samuel Lowery and he was the very first African-American to argue a case before the United States Supreme Court. A very significant event in African-American history, and less than 15 years after the end of the Civil War.
