April 16, 1849
NEW YORK DAILY TRIBUNE, April 16, 1849

* Immigration westward in America (Gold Rush)
* Kit Carson

The front page has nearly 1 1/2 columns on: "Letter From Col. Fremont - Terrible Sufferings of his Party Among the Rocky Mountains".

Most of the account is a very lengthy letter datelined "Taos, New Mexico, Jan. 27, 1849" written from Kit Carson's house, beginning: "I write to you from the house of our good friend Carson. This morning a cup of chocolate was brought to me while in bed. To an overworn, overworked, fatigued & starving traveler, these little luxuries of the world offer an interest which...it is not possible for you to conceive..." and he proceeds to tell about his horrible journey (see for portions).

Great reading on the trials & difficulties in venturing west during the era of the Gold Rush.

Also on the front page: "The Independence Route to California which relates to the Gold Rush (see).

Four pages, light damp staining in the bottom quadrant, generally nice.
