SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York, July 18, 1863
* Battle of Gettysburg
Although not expected in this scientific journal, page 3 does contain a report mentioning the battle of Gettysburg although lacking the detail expected in a daily newspaper (see).
Under the heading: "Major-General George Gordon Meade", a portion of the report includes: "...Meade...put it in rapid motion towards Gettysburgh, Pennsylvania, at which place the rebels under General Lee were in large force, 'flushed with the pride of successful invasion'. In a series of brilliant...battles...and continuing three days, desperate charges were repeatedly made by the enemy...the brave army of the Potomac withstand the shock until the rebels were everywhere repulsed & commenced a rapid retreat...' with more.
But the balance of the article is a biography of Meade's military career, taking over a full column.
The balance of this 16 page issue is taken up with the latest scientific improvements and developments with some illustrations. Never bound nor trimmed with wide margins, small library stamp in the masthead, small hole in the front leaf not affecting the Gettysburg report.
