This newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the19th century.
As noted in Wikipedia: "Niles edited and published the Weekly Register until 1836, making it into one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States and himself into one of the most influential journalists of his day. Devoted primarily to politics, Niles' Weekly Register is considered an important source for the history of the period."
The best content in this issue is the very lengthy report headed: "The Gold Region" which has a prefacing paragraph beginning: "We have brought together several articles having a reference to the recent discoveries of the previous metals in our newly-acquired possessions, which furnish much valuable information on the subject of our own currency & that of other nations..." and what follows are several reports from the California gold regions and elsewhere. The subheads include: "the Precious Metals" "The Discovery of the California Gold Mines" "Gold" "The Opening of the Isthmus of Panama" and "Emigration to California". All this reporting takes nearly two full pgs. (see photos for portions).
Other articles in this issue of interesting include "Slavery in the District", "Comet", much on the military, much reporting from Congress, "The Dead Sea Expedition", a letter from "Barrington, Texas" responded to by a letter signed in type: Sam Houston regarding "Texas Annexation", and more.
Measures 8 1/2 by 12 in., 16 pages, very nice condition.
