THE NEW YORK HERALD, April 8, 1865 This issue is published during the closing moments of the Civil War--indeed, General Robert E. Lee would surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant the very next day. The ftpg. features a very large map headed: "STRIKING THE FLYING REBELS--Scene of the Important Operations of the 6th Instant--The Rear of Lee's Army Cut Off & Captured by the 2nd & 6th Corps." The maps shows the various towns around the Appomattox River, with much detail (see). There are also great first column heads including: "GRANT" "Victory!" "Lee Again Routed" "The Rebel Generals Ewell, Kirshaw, Barton, DeBose, Custis Lee and Corse Captured" "The Surrender of Lee Expected" "Richmond" and more. A terrific issue for display with the large map, the great reporting, and the historic date. Eight pgs., some minor foxing, nice condition.
