May 11, 1865
THE SIXTH CORPS, Danville, Virginia, May 11, 1865 A quite rare, single sheet newspaper printed for Union troops at the end of the war. Such newspapers were considered "camp newspapers" as they were published by the various military units typically for distribution among their own, so quantities were very limited and few survived. This is the volume 1, number 18 issue of this title. The ftpg. contains a poem titled: "When We Go Home!" as well as articles: "The Defenders of the Union" "Military Directory" "Reduction of the Expenses of the Military Establishment" "Important Order from Gen'l Halleck" "Reduction of Expenditures" "Order from the War and Treasury Departments" "Declaration of "Exchange of Prisoners of War". The bkpg. has: "Looking Ahead" "From the North" "The Sixth Corps at Petersburg and Sailor's Creek" "Presentation to President Johnson" "The Cotton Now in the South" plus "General Orders" by Major General Wright. Also several ads.  Complete as a single sheet newspaper, folio size, A few small archival mends at the margins, and a water stain at the left side which causes no loss of readability. A fine opportunity of a rare newspaper.
