December 10, 1777
THE PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER OR THE PHILADELPHIA MARKET-DAY ADVERTISER, December 10, 1777  This was a strongly Tory (supportive of the British cause) newspaper which began in 1775 and closed shop in May of 1778 when the British evacuated Philadelphia. Rarely found today.
One-third of the ftpg. has a nice Speech of the governor of New Jersey with an introductory comment which acknowledges the Tory sympathies of this paper: "The following is a specimen of the progress of the tyranny, knavery, & oppression of congressional authority. From the rebel paper printed at Fish Kill..."  which begins: "I heartily congratulate you on the important success of the American arms at Bennington & Fort Schuyler...reflects the brightest lustre on the bravery of our officers & men, may serve to teach Great Britain that we are not to be subdued by proclamations..." with much more (see photos). This letter carries over to take close to half of pg. 2 as well. Pg. 2 also has an excellent: "Extract of a Letter from an Officer in Gen. Washington's army, dated Camp near Skippack, 6th October, 1777" prefaced with: "The following is an account, from the Rebels, of the late action at Germantown, copied from Edes's Boston Gazette..." which goes on to provide some nice detail on the historic battle of Germantown (see photos for the full text).
Page 2 also has other war-related items including: "From Staten Island we are informed that 2 men...had fallen into the enemies hands...and, effecting their escape, traveled 7 weeks through the woods in the county of Sussex, New Jersey...The rebel troops, which had lately appeared at North Castle, Tarry Town...suddenly retired. There is not the smallest body of rebels collected within many miles of King's bridge..." with more. Pg. 2 also has: "a letter found in Fort Montgomery after it was taken, datelined Kinston June 2, 1777 (see photos for full text). Pg. 3 has several "Regulations under which the inhabitants may purchase the enumerated articles...of his Excellency Sir William Howe..." with the full text (see). The balance of pg. 3 is taken up with ads, with most of pg. 3 taken up with ads as well.
Complete in 4 pgs., some professional archival repairs at the blank margins, a small portion of pg. 2 has dirtiness affecting 4 lines of type but causing no loss of readability. Some wrinkling.
Not surprisingly, being a Tory newspaper the masthead features an engraving of the Royal coat-of-arms.
