OREGON STATEMAN, Salem, 1864  Salem is the capital of Oregon, located in the center of the Willamette Valley alongside the Willamette River. Salem was founded in 1842 & became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851.
It is rare for us to find Oregon titles from during the American Civil War.
Complete in four pages, good condition.

OREGON WEEKLY TRIBUNE, Pendleton, 1875  Pendleton is an East Oregon town which began in 1851, originally known as Marshall only later to be renamed Pendleton. This is an early issue from five years before the town would be incorporated, with various news of the day and many ads as well, several of which are illustrated.

This is the volume 1, number 25 issue of a title which is quite rare, as Gregory's "Union Lit of American Newspapers" notes that it existed for less than 1 1/2 years, and only the Bancroft Library had issues recorded. They deaccessioned their holdings many years ago, so no issues are recorded in any American institution.

MISSION MIRROR, San Francisco, Dec. 13, 1879  Printed in the masthead is: "The only Paper Wholly Printed and Published at the Mission, a Locality Containing 20,000 Inhabitants."  This would be the famous Mission Delores, still located on 16th St. (see photos & the hyperlink).
Page 2 has a political notice supporting: "For president in 1880, Ulysses S. Grant, of Illinois".
Four pages, some margin wear with minimal text loss (see lower left corner in photo), should be handled with care.

This is a volume two issue with minor edge wear, otherwise in quite nice condition. DAILY EVENING NEWS, Portland, Oregon, Aug. 12, 1874  Not just an early newspaper from Oregon, but this newspaper seemingly had a brief life, Gregory noting issues were found frsom 1873-4. Gregory also notes that there are no American institutions holding issues, as the Bancroft Library deaccession all its holdings many years ago, and is from where this issue came.
Page 2 has: "An Indian War" and "General Hardie on the Modoc War" among other items.
Four pages, nice condition.

THE SAN DIEGO UNION, California, June 29, 1878  The front page has; "The Indian War" "Later From Oregon--The Klamath Indians Growing Restless" mentioning in part: "...from Oregon is that the Klamath braves are getting restless, and are eager to join in the war. They have already commenced murdering settlers and stealing stock..." with more.
Four pages, archival strengthening at some margins, and a bit fragile but in nice condition.

SALEM DAILY RECORD, Oregon, July 27, 1874  A very rare title as this is a volume issue of a newspaper that existed for just over one year. Gregory notes that only 3 institutions have any holdings, one of which has but a single issue.
Today Salem is the capital of Oregon. Page 3 has nearly a full column article on: "The Gervais Excursion" telling of a travel from Salem to the town of Gervais, about a 14 mile journey. A nice, early travelogue.

NEW YORK TIMES, Feb. 14, 1874  The front page begins with 1 1/2 columns on: "CONGRESS" "The Modocs and Oregon Settlers" and also on the front page a full column on: "THE INDIAN TROUBLE" with subheads: "Opinion in the Interior Department--Spotted Tail's Complains--Why He Is Off His Reservation--The Trouble With the Sioux--The Wood Party Not Attacked--Troops to be Dispatched".
Eight pages, four small binding holes near the spine do not affect mentioned articles, otherwise nice condition.
