Virginia-Gazettes

In the world of collecting historic newspapers those of the colonial and Revolutionary War eras have remained among the most desired--and the most scarce. While issues from the northern colonies turn up from time to time, issues from the South have remained exceedingly scarce.

So it was with much excitement when we recently added to inventory a selection of the much desired "Virginia Gazette", published in the town which is synonymous with the colonial era: Williamsburg. Curiously, there were four different newspapers which published at the same time with the title "Virginia Gazette", three in Williamsburg and one in nearby Norfolk. Our issues were published by Alexander Purdie who was the official Virginia "public printer" in Williamsburg in 1775. He would become the postmaster in Williamsburg in 1775 as well.

We are pleased to offer several issues to our customers (shown below).
