July 05, 1861
THE MANCHESTER GUARDIAN, England, July 5, 1861 Whereas this particular issue is inconsequential (in regards to containing historical reports), it has an attachment that is rarely found on the front page.
Printed on orange paper is a large label headed: "Newspaper Despatch Only. From Liverpool Agency of New York Associated Press..." noting that this newspaper was sent by the steamship "Asia" and that it: "Sailed July 6, 1861" bound for the "HERALD NEW YORK".
Given this was before the Atlantic telegraph was formally successful, the only way for news to be exchanged across the ocean was by ship. It is possible the Guardian and the Herald had a reciprocal exchange subscription operated by the Associated Press, which was founded 15 years earlier.
Also of interest is a back page report headed: "Death Of Mrs. Barrett Browning", the famed British poet. It begins: "...announces the death of Mrs. Browning at Florence, on Saturday last. The gifted woman was born in 1809 and it is stated that she 'wrote largely at ten years of age, and well at fifteen'..." with more on her life & career. Nice to have this report in a British newspaper.
Four pages, large folio size, never bound nor trimmed, mild wear at the margins, archival mends across the horizontal fold, some paper loss at the fold not affecting the mentioned article.
