CLEVELAND MORNING LEADER, Ohio, April 28, 1865 While most newspapers with historic reports have little if any front page graphic appeal, this issue is different. The front page has a very nice stack of column heads on the death of John Wilkes Booth, but the stunning content is found on pages 2 and 3.
The top of the front page has column heads including: "J. W. BOOTH ! " "SHOT" "Harrold Captured!" "They Are Taken near Bowling Green, Va." "The Murderer's Remains in Washington" "Full Details of the Affair!" "The Funeral Train" "The Ceremonies in Buffalo" "Jeff. Davis Pushing For Texas" and more.
Pages 2 and 3 are exceedingly unusual, appearing more like broadsides. There is no text save for that found within the graphics, as page 2 is bordered to appear much like a monument in memory of Lincoln, and page 3 has a black border surrounding short poems and portions of a "Speech of Abraham Lincoln" and a line from his "Emancipation Proclamation".
Complete as a 4 page newspaper, archival rejoined at the spine, in great condition. The bold, wide lines on page 2 cause noticeable bleed-through on the front page
An exceedingly unusual newspaper with perhaps the best page 2 & 3 graphics we have ever seen.
