March 17, 1853

NEW-YORK DAILY TIMES, March 17, 1853

* "Uncle Tom's Cabin" reaches the Senate floor
* Slave labor's impact on Southern prosperity

The front page has the text of a discussion on the floor of The Senate in which two opposing senators wield references to Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" quite differently. Interesting to see the impact her book is having throughout the world in such a short period of time. Ironically, page 2 has a nearly 3-column article contrasting the impact of slave labor vs. free labor on the prosperity of Southern agriculture.
Other news of the day and period ads found throughout.
Complete in 8 pgs, one archival tape mend, slightly brittle for the era, but in overall good condition.
