April 16, 1865
NEW YORK HERALD, April 16, 1865

* Abraham Lincoln's assassination
* John Wilkes Booth- Ford's Theatre

This date was a Sunday, and only rarely were Sunday newspapers bound into volumes held by libraries. As such, this date is arguably more scarce than the issue of April 15.
And when it comes to graphic appeal, it could also be argued that this edition of the 16th surpasses that of the 15th.
All columns on all 8 pages have black mourning rules for the death of President Abraham Lincoln. Almost the entire first column of the front page is taken up with headlines on the assassination and the reaction of the nation, including: "OUR LOSS" "The Great National Calamity" "DEATH of the PRESIDENT" "Sad Details of the Terrible Event" "The Last Moments of the President" "Scene at The Death Bed" "Identification Of The Murderer" "John Wilkes Booth the Assassin" and so much more (see photos).
The entire front page is taken up with related reports on the assassination carrying over to take much of pgs. 4, 5 and 8 as well. Pg. 8 also has: "Inauguration OF Vice President Johnson As PRESIDENT of the United States" with a bit more.
A terrific issue for display as many of the first column headlines are in much larger type than was typically used.
Complete with all 8 pages, and rare in that this issue was never bound nor trimmed (very desirable as such). In such condition the issue folds out to be one huge sheet of newsprint. There is some very light browning near folds, mild wear at the central fold and edges, generally in uncommonly nice condition for a newspaper of this vintage which never had the benefit of having been protected with a bound volume for over 100 years.
