DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, August 27, 1863

  • P. G. T. Beauregard letter
  • re. Battle of Gettysburg
  • From the Confederate capital

A nice newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy, the city to which all war-related news would flow. In additional to many advertisements, the front page has: "From General Lee's Army & The Valley--Other Movements" "Another Prize on the Rappahannock" "Look At Them" "The Situation In Tennessee" "Yankee Raid Into King George" "From Mississippi" "City Intelligence" "Rumors From the Southwest" and other smaller items.
The back page is surrounded by a wide black mourning rule for the death of the former governor, as noted at the beginning of the editorial: "The Hon. John B. Floyd, Major General of Virginia & formerly Governor, died yesterday of disease contracted in the military service of his country..." with more. The bkpg. also has: "Still Later From the North--Destruction of Lawrence, Kansas--The Whole Town Swept--A Perfect Success--Bombardment of Fort Sumter" and "The Siege of Charleston--Progress & Events of the Siege--General Gillmore's Demand for the Evacuation of Morris Island & Fort Sumter--General Beauregard's Reply" which includes a lengthy letter signed by him in type: G. T. Beauregard; "From Mississippi" "An Intercepted Letter From Bragg's Army" & a few other items.
The bkpg. also has a item headed "Tribute of Respect" for: "...the death of Captain William H. Murray...who fell, with many others of that brave little band, while charging the enemy's second line of breastworks at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on the 3rd of July."
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a full banner masthead, a bit close-trimmed at the bottom of the bkpg. right margin affects only a portion of the mourning rule and a few letters in 2 ads, otherwise in very nice, clean condition.
