April 16, 1912
NEW YORK AMERICAN, April 16, 1912 Perhaps you've seen this front page before, as it has been commonly reprinted, for obvious reasons. But this is a genuine issue--one of the very best issues on the sinking of the Titanic to be had.
As the photos show, the front page is very dramatic with one-third of the page print captioned: "The Titanic as she rammed the iceberg. Drawn from the wireless reports of the disaster." Although historically inaccurate, it does provide the drama the newspaper wanted in grabbing attention at the news stand.
The balance of the front page is taken up with various dispatches as were received by time the newspaper went to press. One report notes: "More than 1,500 persons, passengers and crew, perished yesterday with the 'unsinkable' Titanic, the $10,000,000 White Star liner, went to the bottom of the sea."
As if this front page was not sufficient, pages 2-7 offer incredible coverage and even more graphics, with the page 2 banner headline: "LINER SINKS 4 HOURS AFTER STRIKING". Other pages are seen in the photos provided, with pages 6 & 7 appearing as a doublepage presentation featuring a cross-section of the Titanic.
This issue is complete in 20 pages, although only 16 are called for in the dateline. There is minor chipping at the bottom margin not touching any text, occasional margin tears as is typical of the period, but is otherwise in uncommonly nice condition with virtually no wear at the central fold. This issue came out of a bound volume which protected it for the past100+ years. There are a few discrete archival mends at margins on inside leaves. It is very fragile and must be handled carefully.
