July 02, 1863

CAROLINA SPARTAN, Spartanburg, South Carolina, July 2, 1863

* Very rare Confederate title
* Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi

A rare Confederate title to say the least. The front page begins with some nice reporting on the siege of Vicksburg with reports headed “From Vicksburg” which include some over optimistic thoughts: “…that perfect confidence prevails among our men. They are fully able to hold Vicksburg as long as they have anything to eat…Grant’s ditches are within 100 yards of our fortifications in one place, but nobody is uneasy about this…” with more. This Mississippi stronghold would fall to the Northern forces just 2 days after the publication of this newspaper. Also on the front page are: “Seizure of a Steamer & Escape of Confederates” “From Vicksburg” “Slave Labor For the Coast” and various notices and advertisements.
The back page has more war-related items including: “The Situation in Mississippi” “Funeral Arrangements & Obsequies” “Way-Side Hospital Columbia” “Another Company” “Rosecrans’ Official Report of the Battle of Murfreesboro” and other items.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, never bound nor trimmed with wide margins, mild wear at the folds with toning to a portion of the back page. Two small archival mends near the margins of the back page.
