THE NEW YORK HERALD, November 10, 1861

* Captain Gordon convicted - appeals for a new trial


Among the front page one column headlines on the Civil War are: "THE REBELLION" "Reported Landing of the Expedition" "The Rebels  Drives Out of  their Batteries on the Rappahannock" "Additional Particulars of the Battle of Belmont" "The Town Evacuated by the Rebel Forces" "Important News From Missouri" "Reported Defeat of the Rebels Under Jeff. Thompson" and more (see).
Not shown in the images is a rather inconspicuous report at the bottom of page 5 which mentions the conviction of Captain Nathaniel Gordon for activities related to the slave trade, and reports his request for a new trial. Note: In February, 1862, he would become the 1st and only American to be tried, convicted, and hung for such activities.
