THE DAILY UNION, Washington, D.C. A trio of issues dated July 27, 28 & 30, 1847. Together these issues contain what is essentially a diary of General Stephen Kearny's march with his army from Santa Fe to Southern California with dates of entry ranging from the day he set off for Calif. on September 25, 1846 to December 5, 1846,just before the Battle of San Pasqual, however Kearny does add a note at the very end: "The foregoing is a literal copy of the rough notes of my late aid-de-camp, Capt. A. R. Johnston...who was killed at daybreak on the 6th of December, 1846, in an action with the Californians at San Pascual." (see). Included is is entry of Oct. 6 which notes: "...After marching about three miles we met Kit Carson direct on express from California....He informs us that Colonel Fremont is probably civil & military governor of California..." and so much more.
An extremely detailed & significant report of this early expedition to California, signed in type at its conclusion: S. W. Kearny, Brig. Gen. dated at San Diego, Jan. 25, 1847.
Each issue is complete in 4 pages and is in very nice condition. Each issue also has various reports on the Mexican War, however they pale in comparison to the terrific Kearny travelogue.
