November 07, 1874
HARPER'S WEEKLY, New York, Nov. 7, 1874

* Famous 1st Republican elephant print
* Thomas Nast illustration

The full front page is a Thomas Nast political cartoon: "A Tammany Rat", but certainly the most significant print in this issue is another full page Thomas Nast political cartoon titled: 'The 3rd term Panic' which shows the Republican elephant for the very first time. Thomas Nast was the creator of both the Republican elephant and the Democratic donkey, as well as the modern version of Santa Claus.
Other prints include a doublepage centerfold of: "German Emigrants for New York Embarking on a Hamburg Steamer". The Winslow Homer print typically in this issue has been removed.
A very significant issue on two accounts. Has 16 of 20 pages with the "Supplement", otherwise in very nice condition.
