THE NEW YORK TIMES, Oct. 31, 1938

* War of the Worlds original (1st report)
* H. G. Wells radio broadcast panic

The now famous "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast by Orson Wells caused quite a panic in many cities, but unfortunately the coverage in the following day's newspaper was typically unspectacular. This issue is one of the nicer presentations we have seen with two column heads at the top of the front page: "Radio Listeners in Panic, Taking War Drama as Fact" "Many In This Area Flee Homes to Escape Gas Raid--Phone Calls Swamp Police During Broadcast of Wells Fantasy". The article begins: "A wave of mass hysteria seized thousands of radio listeners throughout the nation between 8:15 and 9:30 o'clock last night..." with much more, including the reaction of people in various cities. The articles carries over to page four where it continues for more than a column.
Complete in 36 pages, some small tape mends at margins, light browning, generally good condition.
