LPGA forms in 1949...

Item # 564463

September 14, 1949

THE NEW YORK TIMES, September 14, 1949

* Ladies Professional Golf Association formation (LPGA)
* Patty Berg - Babe Didrikson Zaharias

This 64 page newspaper has one column headlines on page 45: "PRO GROUP FORMED FOR WOMEN'S GOLF" "Organization to Conduct Open Tourney Sept. 22-25--Miss Berg Elected President"

This was the actual formation of the Ladies Professional Golf Association of America (LPGA). A nice item for the golf enthusiast.

Other news of the day. Light browning with minor spine wear, otherwise in nice condition.

wikipedia notes: The LPGA was founded in 1949 by a group of 13 women, including Babe Didrikson Zaharias. It is now the oldest ongoing women's professional sports organization in the United States. Retired Rear Admiral Marsha J. Evans is the current interim LPGA Commissioner. She took over from Carolyn Bivens, who resigned under pressure from players in July 2009. At the time of Bivens' resignation, the tour only had 14 events locked in for 2010. On October 28, 2009 the LPGA boasrd of directors announced that marketing executive Michael Whan had been hired as the permanent replacement for Bivens and would assume his duties in January 2010.
