July 11, 1850

NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, July 11, 1850.

* President Zachary Taylor death
* In a Washington D.C. newspaper

On the front page at the top of the first column is a report (shown in the inset) announcing the sudden death of Zachary Taylor, the twelfth President of the United States. Includes his last "intelligible" words: "I am not afraid to die; I have done my duty; my only regret is leaving those who are dear to me." Pgs. 2 and 3 also have content relating to Taylors death. In honor of Taylors death, the top and bottom of this report are black-bordered, as are the perimeters of each page. Great to have in a newspaper from the nations capital as well as from where the event occurred. Subscribers name written in the blank margin above the masthead, a bit of lite rubbing in unrelated content on the ftpg., small hole in the outer margin of the first leaf, archival mend to a minor tear on the second leaf.
