Background: On January 24, 1935, the passenger liner SS Mohawk sank off the coast of Sea Girt, New Jersey, after a freezing night voyage led to its automatic steering mechanism failing, forcing the crew to switch to manual steering; a subsequent miscommunication of helm orders caused the liner to turn sharply into the path of the Norwegian freighter Talisman, whose ice-strengthened bow gouged the Mohawk's port side and caused it to sink in under an hour, taking 47 lives (32 crew members and 15 passengers) out of 163 onboard. Beyond its immediate tragedy, the disaster carried immense historical significance because it occurred just four months after the catastrophic SS Morro Castle fire off the exact same coast under the same operating line (Ward Line), severely shattering public trust in American passenger ship operations and serving as a crucial catalyst for major safety overhauls—including stricter U.S. Maritime Commission regulations, mandatory emergency steering redundancies, updated radio communications, and standardized lifeboat protocols.
