Background: Fought in 1952, during the Korean War, the Battle of Triangle Hill (Shangganling Campaign) saw United Nations forces—primarily the U.S. 7th Infantry Division and ROK 2nd Infantry Division—attempt to capture two heavily fortified Chinese positions along the Iron Triangle in Gangwon Province, North Korea: Triangle Hill and Sniper Ridge, situated just 1.5 to 2 kilometers apart north of Gimhwa-eup. Despite overwhelming UN firepower and heavy air strikes, Chinese People's Volunteer Army forces successfully utilized an intricate network of deep underground tunnels and bunkers to withstand artillery bombardment and mount fierce counterattacks, resulting in a disastrous UN repulse after 42 days of brutal, high-casualty warfare. Historically, the battle proved to be one of the bloodiest engagements of the Korean War's stalemate phase, marking the final major UN offensive initiative of the war and demonstrating that UN forces could no longer easily seize well-entrenched communist ground, which ultimately solidified the static frontlines that formed the basis for the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement.
