Background: Delivered to the Reichstag following the swift defeat and partition of Poland with the Soviet Union, Adolf Hitler’s October 6, 1939 speech was a tactical "peace offer" designed to force Great Britain and France to legitimize Nazi territorial gains without triggering a prolonged Western conflict. Proclaiming that the Polish state was permanently erased and that Eastern European affairs were strictly a matter between Berlin and Moscow, Hitler offered a conditional cessation of hostilities and called for an international conference on disarmament and trade, warning that any Allied refusal would lay full blame for a devastating continental war on the West. By firmly rejecting the ultimatum on the grounds that true peace could not be built on aggression or Nazi promises, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and French Premier Édouard Daladier cemented the formal commitment of the Western Allies to fight WWII, locking Europe into the war and setting the stage for the invasion of France and the Low Countries the following spring.
