Background: Paul Hornung’s December 4, 1956 Heisman Trophy victory stands as an unprecedented anomaly in college football history: he remains the only player ever to win the award while playing for a losing team, carrying Notre Dame through a dismal 2–8 season. Dubbed "The Golden Boy" for his astonishing versatility, Hornung played virtually every role on the field—including quarterback, halfback, fullback, safety, and placekicker—and finished second nationally in total offense with 1,337 yards. His individual brilliance so thoroughly overshadowed his team's struggles that he edged out stars on undefeated powerhouses, defeating Tennessee's Johnny Majors and Oklahoma's Tommy McDonald in one of the tightest voting races in the award's history.
