Background: The 1934 Saudi–Yemeni War served as a decisive turning point in Arabian Peninsula geopolitics, firmly establishing Saudi Arabia as the region's dominant military and diplomatic power while permanently solidifying its southwestern borders. By halting his armies at Hodeidah rather than occupying the capital of Sana'a, King Ibn Saud astutely avoided an unwieldy occupation, using his military leverage instead to negotiate the milestone Treaty of Taif on May 20, 1934. This treaty formally secured Yemen’s recognition of Saudi sovereignty over the resource-rich and strategic border regions of Asir, Jizan, and Najran, defining boundaries that remain largely intact today and demonstrating an early masterclass in using limited military victory to achieve long-term state consolidation and regional stability.
