Background: On November 2, 1930, Haile Selassie I (born Ras Tafari Makonnen) was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia alongside Empress Menen Asfaw at the Cathedral of St. George in Addis Ababa, taking the exalted titles King of Kings, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, and Elect of God. The extravagant, globally broadcast ceremony brought foreign dignitaries and international journalists to East Africa, successfully projecting Ethiopian sovereignty and modern diplomatic stature to the world while simultaneously fulfilling biblical prophecies in the eyes of Jamaican followers, directly giving birth to the Rastafari movement.
