Background: Occurring on April 22, 1938, at the Keen Mountain Mine in Buchanan County, Virginia, the Red Jacket mine disaster claimed the lives of 45 miners in a violent coal dust and gas explosion, making it the deadliest U.S. coal mining accident of that year and one of the worst industrial catastrophes in state history. The blast erupted from the mine portals with volcano-like force during a shift change, leaving only three survivors and devastating the local coal community of Hanger. Beyond its immediate human toll, the tragedy exposed the fatal hazards of inadequate ventilation and uncontrolled coal dust at a time when inspectors lacked enforcement authority, serving as a vital catalyst for national mine safety reform that helped push through expanded federal inspection powers in 1941.
