Background: Played on January 2, 1987, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, the 1987 Sunkist Fiesta Bowl was an iconic national championship clash between the undefeated #1 Miami Hurricanes and #2 Penn State Nittany Lions, famously pitting Jimmy Johnson's flashy, camouflage-wearing Miami squad against Joe Paterno's traditional, blue-collar Penn State team. Despite Miami overwhelmingly outgaining Penn State in total yardage 445 to 162, the Nittany Lions pulled off a dramatic 14–10 upset by forcing seven turnover-plagued mistakes from Miami, including five interceptions thrown by Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde. Penn State linebacker Shane Conlan earned Defensive MVP honors with two key interceptions—the second setting up D.J. Dozier's go-ahead 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter—before linebacker Pete Giftopoulos sealed Penn State's second national title by intercepting Testaverde on fourth-and-goal at the 6-yard line with just 18 seconds remaining.
