Background: On October 15, 1928, the German airship LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin touched down at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, completing the world's first commercial transatlantic passenger flight after an arduous 111-hour, 44-minute journey from Friedrichshafen, Germany. Under the command of Dr. Hugo Eckener, the airship spanned over 5,000 miles carrying 20 passengers, 40 crew members, and more than 50,000 pieces of mail. The historic voyage was nearly derailed on October 13 when severe turbulence tore the fabric covering off the lower port tail fin over the ocean; in a dramatic act of bravery, a small rigging crew—including Eckener’s son, Knut—crawled out onto the exterior structure mid-flight to lash down the damaging canvas while suspended thousands of feet in the air. Upon its safe touchdown at Lakehurst, the airship was greeted by thousands of cheering spectators, cementing its legacy in aviation history and earning the crew a ticker-tape parade in New York City.
