Background: On August 17, 1966, San Francisco Giants legend Willie Mays hit his 535th career home run at Candlestick Park off St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ray Washburn, passing Jimmie Foxx (534) to claim sole possession of second place on Major League Baseball’s all-time home run list behind only Babe Ruth (714). The historic milestone came in the bottom of the fourth inning on a 3–2 waist-high slider, breaking up Washburn’s no-hitter and capping a remarkable stretch where Mays hit numbers 533, 534, and 535 in just four days. Mays held the second-place spot on the all-time list for nearly eight years until Hank Aaron surpassed both him and Ruth, with Mays ultimately finishing his Hall of Fame career with 660 home runs.
