ALBANY EVENING NEWS, New York, Nov. 24, 1930

  • George "Baby Face" Nelson
  • Summit Roadhouse robbery

The bottom of the front page has a two column heading: "Dog Battles Eight Robbers Who Kill 3 Women, Escape" with subhead. (see images)
Complete with all 22 pages, light toning and a little wear at the margins, more so along the spine, generally good.

Background: On November 23, 1930, the Summit Roadhouse in Summit, Illinois, was the scene of a deadly robbery linked to infamous gangster Lester Gillis ("Baby Face Nelson") early in his criminal career. During the raid, a gang of armed men held up proprietor Henry Goetz and stole roughly $200. The situation escalated when Goetz’s Great Dane lunged at one of the robbers to protect its owner, biting the intruder’s leg. The startled gunman opened fire, and as Chicago police officer James Micus intervened, the lights were shot out in the chaos, leaving the roadhouse in complete darkness. In the ensuing melee, three women—entertainer Mary Brinmy (22) and patrons Alice Ward (22) and Mary Caney (36)—were killed, and three others were seriously wounded, while the Great Dane managed to escape the gunfire unhurt.
