Background: On October 8, 1940, the Cincinnati Reds captured their second World Series title by defeating the Detroit Tigers 2–1 in Game 7 at Crosley Field. Trailing 1–0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Reds rallied when Frank McCormick kicked off the frame with a double, eventually scoring the tying run on a Jimmy Ripple double, before Billy Myers drove in the championship-winning run with a sacrifice fly. Reds ace Paul Derringer delivered a stellar complete-game performance on the mound, allowing only seven hits and one unearned run to outduel Detroit's Bobo Newsom. The victory was bolstered by 40-year-old coach Jimmie Wilson, who stepped in for an injured Ernie Lombardi to catch all seven games and bat .353, capping off a dramatic comeback in a Series where Cincinnati had previously trailed 3–2.
