Background: Overnight on September 8–9, 1946, Zionist paramilitary groups—primarily the Irgun and Lehi—launched a widespread, coordinated sabotage campaign against the British Mandatory authorities in Palestine, targeting the nation's transportation infrastructure by cutting, mining, and bombing the Palestine Railways network at approximately 50 distinct locations. Carried out shortly after the collapse of the unified Jewish resistance movement following the King David Hotel bombing, this wave of railway strikes was accompanied by localized bombings, including an attack on a public building in Tel Aviv on September 9 that killed two British officers. Designed to cripple British military mobility, disrupt commercial transport, and pressure the administration into lifting strict limits on Jewish immigration, the coordinated action marked a deliberate escalation by militant groups aimed at destabilizing British colonial rule in the region.
