Item # 730859 ·

BOSTON GAZETTE, May 25, 1807

  • Edgar Allan Poe's father theater ad

A curious literary item here as the top of page 3 has an advertisement for the "Boston Theatre" for the performance of: "BOSTON SAILORS", a theatrical performance, with the character "Jack Junk" performed by  "Mr. Poe" and more. (see image) He was the father of Edgar Allan Poe.
News of the day and other interesting advertisements. Four pages, nice condition.

Background: On May 25, 1807, David Poe Jr., an itinerant actor and the father of Edgar Allan Poe, appeared at the Federal Street Theatre (Boston Theatre) as the nautical character Jack Junk in the play The Sailors' Landlady—a featured attraction on a benefit night that also showcased the nautical interlude The Boston Sailors; or, The Guardian Frigate. Performing alongside his far more acclaimed actor wife, Elizabeth "Eliza" Arnold Poe, David regularly played supporting stock roles in Snelling Powell's Boston troupe during this period, with character types like the patriotic, rough-and-ready sailor "Jack Junk" standing out as staple light-entertainment fare for Boston's thriving maritime audience. This theatrical era directly shaped the family's history: less than two years later, while still performing in Boston, Eliza gave birth to Edgar Poe on January 19, 1809, before David deserted the family around 1810 and Eliza tragically died of tuberculosis in 1811, leaving the young future author to be raised by John and Frances Allan.
