Background: On May 17, 1939, NBC’s experimental station W2XBS made broadcasting history by airing the first televised baseball game—a double-header college matchup between Princeton and Columbia at Baker Field in New York City, where Princeton ultimately secured a 2–1 victory in 10 innings. Legendary sportscaster Bill Stern delivered the play-by-play for an estimated audience of about 3,000 viewers across roughly 400 primitive television sets in the New York area. The broadcast was a groundbreaking technological test, captured using just a single stationary camera mounted on a 12-foot wooden platform along the third-base line, which made tracking high fly balls and rapid field plays nearly impossible and forced viewers to rely heavily on Stern’s descriptive narration. Despite the technical limitations and raw visual quality, the experiment was hailed as a success, proving that live sports could be successfully captured and transmitted to home screens, and directly paving the way for the first televised Major League Baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds at Ebbets Field just three months later.
