Background: The Henschel Hs 293 stands out in military history as the world’s first operational radio-guided, rocket-boosted air-to-surface missile used in combat, fundamentally pioneering stand-off naval warfare upon its 1943 debut. Derived from a standard SC 500 high-explosive bomb outfitted with short monoplane wings, a tail unit, and an underslung Walter HWK liquid-propellant rocket motor, this 1,045 kg weapon delivered a short 10-second boost before gliding toward its target at speeds reaching up to 930 km/h. Deployed primarily from Luftwaffe bombers like the Dornier Do 217 and Heinkel He 177 against unarmored or lightly armored merchant and escort ships, it relied on a Manual Command to Line-of-Sight (MCLOS) radio link—where a bombardier tracked a bright tail flare and guided the missile via a joystick transmitting through the Kehl-Straßburg radio system.
