1st week of "Spider-Man", in a Los Angeles newspaper...

Item # 730771 ·

LOS ANGELES TIMES (Calendar section only), May 10, 2002

  • Terrific "Spider-Man" film advertisement
  • Grand Opening week movie premiere
  • Superhero - Toby Maguire - James Franco
  • Measures a whopping 23 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches

A terrific issue on the motion picture hit "SPIDER-MAN" and perhaps no better issue could be found than this, the leading newspaper from the home of the entertainment industry - the Hollywood area's prime publication.

Note: Where else might one find authentic, poster-size ads for Opening Day showings, in the most desirable Hollywood-area newspaper - as we were lucky enough to obtain this (and others) indirectly from the Los Angeles Times' own collection? It simply doesn't get any better! In over 40 years of collecting, we have yet to see such unique & dramatic coverage with truly top-shelf, eye-catching displayability (see images).

Inside this section is a great double-page centerfold for the blockbuster film in it's opening week. The premiere was the previous Friday. And with all the different "Spider-Man" movies out their today, this was the one that started it all. I don't think it gets any better than this as far as displayability goes.

Complete "Calendar section" only with all 30 pages, very nice condition.

Background: The May 10, 2002 issue of the Los Angeles Times Calendar section captures Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man at the exact moment it rewritten Hollywood history, coming off its earth-shattering $114.8 million debut—the first film ever to break the $100 million mark in a single weekend. Unlike the May 3 premiere ads that focused primarily on release logistics and billing credits, this second-week double-page centerfold serves as a celebratory "victory lap" spread, dramatically contrasting Tobey Maguire’s iconic red-and-blue suit while plastering the pages with glowing critical praise, record-breaking box office stats, and "Now Playing" showtimes across major Los Angeles venues. Printed on the broad canvas of the classic LA Times newsprint layout, the continuous two-page spread offers a seamless, high-impact visual piece that perfectly encapsulates the dawn of the modern superhero blockbuster era.
