Background: An original 1965 newspaper report covering Mickey Mantle Day is a poignant historical artifact whose rarity and value stem directly from newsprint's ephemeral nature and the emotional weight of the moment. Issued on or immediately following September 18, 1965—when the press and public genuinely believed Mantle’s debilitating knee injuries were bringing his legendary career to a premature end—these contemporary accounts capture the raw emotion of over 50,000 fans, complete wire photos of Mantle alongside Joe DiMaggio, and verbatim transcripts of their speeches before Mantle played his 2,000th game.
