Background: Greg Louganis’s gold-medal recovery on September 20, 1988, stands as one of the most iconic and rare displays of resilience in sports history. Just 24 hours after hitting his head on the springboard during the preliminary rounds—a terrifying accident that left him with a severe laceration requiring four stitches right in the warm-up area—Louganis returned to the board to compete in the 3-meter springboard final. Showing extraordinary composure under intense pressure, he delivered a flawless performance capped by repeating the exact same reverse 2½ somersault in the pike position that had injured him the previous day, earning an incredible 86.10 points on his final attempt to secure the gold medal over China’s Tan Liangde. The moment is extraordinarily rare not only because an athlete recovered so rapidly from a traumatic, high-visibility head injury to win Olympic gold, but also because Louganis subsequently completed a historic "double-double"—winning both the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform gold medals in back-to-back Olympic Games (1984 and 1988), a monumental feat unmatched in modern Olympic diving.
