"Jurassic Park" - review & premiere ad in a Los Angeles newspaper...
LOS ANGELES TIMES (calendar section only), Oct. 20, 1983
- Early actor Tom Cruise
- Just his 2nd lead film role
- American sports drama movie
Often revered as the undisputed "bible" of Hollywood, the Sunday Calendar section occupied a rare space in journalism where a single publication could simultaneously dictate global entertainment trends and govern the inner workings of show business. Today, physical copies are an absolute rarity, largely because they were printed on standard, ephemeral newsprint designed to be devoured and promptly discarded at the end of the week.
Page 3 of this section has a 12 x 8 inch advertisement for the opening day premiere of "ALL THE RIGHT MOVES" the following day.
Provenance note: This issue comes from The Los Angeles Times own archives, part of their in-house collection used to create their digital archive. Rare as such.
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
Complete Calendar section only with all 14 pages, nice condition.
Background: Original October 20, 1983 print advertisements for All the Right Moves serve as valuable pieces of pop-culture ephemera because they capture Tom Cruise at the precise tipping point of his Hollywood superstardom—published just months after his breakthrough in Risky Business (August 1983) and three years before Top Gun (1986) solidified his place as a global icon. Appearing in major newspapers the day prior to its October 21 nationwide release, these opening-day promo ads prominently featured 20th Century Fox’s high-stakes tagline—"He has everything at stake. He can't afford to lose. He's got to make all the right moves"—alongside classic 1980s studio billing blocks detailing the supporting cast (including Lea Thompson and Craig T. Nelson) and theater showcase listings.
