Girard College open to blacks... Hendrik Verwoerd and Leabua Jonathan historic meeting in Pretoria...
THE NEW YORK TIMES, Sept. 3, 1966 The front page has coverage of two notable events. The first has a single-column heading: "GIRARD COLLEGE OPEN TO NEGROES", which is the announcement that Girard College in Philadelphia must accept black students. The article continues on page 48.
The 2nd has a photo with the heading: "Verwoerd Confers With the Leader of a Black State", followed by a supporting article which continues of page six. The coverage tells of the previous day's meeting between South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd and Lesotho Prime Minister Chief Leabua Jonathan in Pretoria - considered a watershed moment. It marked the first official meeting on South African soil between an apartheid leader and the head of an independent black African nation. Facing global isolation, Verwoerd sought to demonstrate his policy of "good neighborliness," showing South Africa could coexist with sovereign black states without internal interference. For Lesotho, an enclave on the brink of British independence, the summit was crucial for securing vital economic ties and transit access. Tragically, the meeting carried added weight: just four days later, Verwoerd was assassinated in Cape Town, making this historic summit his final official diplomatic engagement.
Nice to have coverage of both on the same page.
The front page also has: "Luftwaffe Gets a New Chief; Von Hassel Accepts His Terms", which tells of the appointment of General Johannes Steinhoff appointment to the top position of West Germany's Air Force.
Other news, sports, and advertisements of the day are found throughout.
