The top of the ftpg. has an interesting article: "Smithsonian Institution" which deals with finding an appropriate place to build it. One thought mentioned is on the Mall near the Capitol.
The back page has most of a column taken up with: "Mexican News--Direct" which has a wealth of reporting on the Mexican War.

Page 3 has a wonderful article on the building of what we now know as the "Castle", the original building of the Smithsonian Institution. 
It is headed: "Smithsonian Institution" and bits include: "...The plan adopted out of 13 different designs submitted, was...that of Mr. James Renwick..." with more on him. Then some details on the construction specifics: "...It comprises a museum 200 feet by 50; a library 90 by 50 feet; a gallery of art 125 feet long...The style selected is the later Norman, or rather Lombard, as it prevailed in the 12th century...the building has that irregularity of plank which characterizes the Norman and Gothic styles..." and so much more.
Not only is it wonderful to have such detail on the building of this iconic structure, but to have it in this famous newspaper from the nation's capital.
Page 3 also has some details on the Mexican War events.

Taking fully 3 1/2 columns on pages 1 and 2 is the most detailed account o the laying of the cornerstone of the Smithsonian Institution you could possibly want. But not surprising to find this extensive report in this newspaper from the nation's capital.
The top of page 1 has: "Smithsonian Institution" which begins: "The laying of the corner stone of the Smithsonian Institution took place on Saturday, the first of May, with appropriate and imposing ceremonies, agreeably to the order prescribed by the Marshal-in-Chief...". What follows is a moment-by-moment account with all the speeches, prayers, and other details.
