Perhaps the earliest image of Karl Marx in an American periodical...

Item # 730336 ·

FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED, New York, Dec. 30, 1871  Inside has a small print of: "England--A Game of Football, the Last Scrimmage", which is rugby.
The prime print is one of: "Karl Marx, One of the Founders of the 'Internationale' " with an article on him titled: "Dr. Karl Marx. This is a very early American portrait of Karl Marx, and apparently the earliest presently documented portrait of Marx in an American illustrated periodical. This was just seven weeks after the celebrated portrait first appeared on the front page of Paris’s L’Illustration. That image appeared as Marx, newly notorious following the Paris Commune, was for the first time becoming a recognizable public figure to American readers.
Of interest is that this is also the same date on which Woodhull & Claflin’s Weekly published the first English-language American printing of the Communist Manifesto, making this an unusually significant day in the history of Marx’s reception in the United States.
Sixteen pages, slightly irregular at the blank spine margin, very nice condition.
